Born in Vancouver, Sarah has gone on to live in a number of great cities, including the greatest of cities (she thinks), New York, where she says “you never know what you’re going to find happening around the corner, and there is pretty much always something happening around the corner.” It’s in these great cities that landscape architecture is particularly important, she thinks. Public space is limited, so it needs to work for as many different people as possible.

Sarah has been critically and creatively addressing the challenges of urban public space since beginning her career. After completing her Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Visual Art and Art History at Sarah Lawrence College and her Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto, she worked with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates in Brooklyn, where she contribute to high-profile projects in New York and Toronto. Since returning to her hometown and joining Hapa in 2011, Sarah has brought her exceptional design skills to all stages of projects, from schematic design to construction administration, often as project manager. One of the most senior members of our team, she excels at many things, including compilation and preparation and preparation of illustrations and diagramming graphics for presentations and planning work.

Her approach is xxxxx by knowing when to keep things simple, and when to add complexity. According to Sarah, the best places don’t draw attention to the design tricks that made them great. They just feel good. For example: the Foot of Lonsdale Plaza, a project on which Sarah played an instrumental role (and which also happens to be one of her favourites). Among many highlights from the project was conceptualizing the plaza’s mega bench, then seeing it get built “as giant and crazy as we first imagined.” After hours, Sarah enjoys spending time with her husband and son, exploring cities, gardening, eating, and visiting beaches.
