800 Robson
Vancouver BC

800 Robson was initially intended as a pedestrian-first space. Our immediate notion was to restore the earlier programming as led by the 1977 courthouse design by Arthur Erickson and Cornelia Oberlander. By removing vehicular access, the square could assume its original role as a vibrant hub for civic activity in conjunction with the larger network of neighbouring plazas. Democratizing public space for a wide range of events and enjoyment embodies the successful spirit of attention to flexibility.

To realize our shared vision for the 800 block of Robson meant losing a block of vehicle traffic in a busy downtown. Although a sensitive proposition, it was proved that traffic and mobility wouldn’t be adversely affected — and that in fact the closure would benefit more user groups overall.

The project began with a rigorous public engagement strategy, including a highly-visible temporary installation that doubled as a public call to action and engagement piece. Interactive, inclusive sessions established a wider vision for the new plaza and included a series of on-location open houses, a Talk Vancouver online survey, and meetings with members of the original architectural design team. These efforts prompted a broader scope than originally envisioned; intersection design, traffic and signalization management, and bike lane redesign. We also met with the original architectural design team behind Robson Square, who provided key concepts and design principles from the primary plans.

The consequential design shares a kindred familiarity with the original paving patterns, signature elements and the preservation of the double-rowed Maple trees on Hornby Street. In the same breath, 21st century lighting fixtures enhance the time-honoured design with a touch of modernity. By allowing 800 Robson to function as primarily intended, it will continue to flourish as a robust commuting corridor; a comfortable space for lingering and enjoyment, and a flexible destination for events and demonstrations alike.
