Southlands Lot 40
Tsawwassen, BC
The residential courtyard is imagined as a clearing in a forest. Residential patios are buffered from neighbours by woodland planting and small trees, lining a central open meadow and gathering space with communal cooking, dining and socializing opportunities. Hop vines spill out from the adjacent brewery and form a canopy overhead that evolves through the growing season.
Edible planting in the public realm, like the buffering row of espaliered apple trees, takes inspiration from the agricultural community it is located within, and a range of companion planting offers mutual benefit to these nearby productive landscapes. The adjacent living street “woonerf” provides a public interface that celebrates the human scale and pedestrian experience.
