Pebble Beach Waterfront
Marathon, ON
Pebble Beach is a popular public space in the Town of Marathon, Northern Ontario. Located along the shores of Lake Superior, this lookout originally consisted of a gravel parking lot, playground, and an informal pathway down to the water that was steep and eroding. This project aimed to revitalize the site by celebrating views of the lake, inviting exploration of the space and formalizing access.
Program features included a boardwalk, viewing decks, formalized lawn, playground, a paved parking lot and formalized access to the water. The project also examined the future inclusion of both drive-in and walk-in campsites. The overall design of the site was inspired by the geological history which formed the Great Lakes and ultimately a series of terraced landforms typical of that area. This terraced design allowed for us to balance cut and fill while enhancing views for both those enjoying the view from their cars and those sitting along the boardwalk below.
