Guichon Creek Sinkhole
at BCIT
Burnaby, BC

Hapa Collaborative partnered with Kerr Wood Leidal to transform a campus sinkhole into a thriving biophilic waterscape. By daylighting the underground culvert that once confined Guichon Creek and reinforcing its banks with river rocks, the design honors the waterway’s unrelenting natural course.

This restoration creates vital habitat for wildlife, particularly salmonids. Salmon can now migrate further upstream for the first time in nearly 60 years, reconnecting the landscape to its natural rhythms. Beyond ecological benefits, the project enhances flood capacity and strengthens campus infrastructure, ensuring long-term resilience.
