BC Parkway Framework Plan – Boundary to Royal Oak
Burnaby, BC

The BC Parkway Enhancement project focuses on a 30-m right-of-way corridor in the City of Burnaby from Boundary Road to Royal Oak SkyTrain station. The corridor is highly underutilized today, with underground utility barriers and safety concerns from the public. The aspiration is to transform the Parkway into a lively linear park with new opportunities for recreation, lounging, socializing and events, serving the needs of the community and responding to the objectives set out in the Metrotown Downtown Plan. Hapa Collaborative was hired to create a long-term Framework Plan for the corridor and lead the efforts in a cohesive, implementable vision, supported by subconsultants to review the ecological and infrastructure layers, as well as the visual branding component.

The project process has been a dynamic one, involving two engagement rounds with the public and key interested parties, as well as important collaboration with key partners BC Hydro, TransLink and the Host Nations. A complimentary momentum-building initiative led by the City for temporary summer activations along the Parkway – named “Parkway Alive” – has been running concurrently in summer months of 2023 and 2024, bringing momentum and excitement to the future of the Parkway.
