A fixture on Dunbar Street for several decades, Stong’s Grocery is undergoing a massive change to densify on site with a new four-storey mixed use building that will continue as Stong’s Market in the future. The public realm of the site along Dunbar is activated by a café terrace at the corner of Dunbar and 30th Avenue, raised slightly off the street. This transitions to a more residential streetscape on the side streets that integrate soft planting, water features, seating and lobby entrances. A large open shared roof deck includes children’s play, urban agriculture including a miniature apple orchard, outdoor seating and prominent views to the north and south. Laneway treatments include hedge planting and roof top tree planting to buffer loading and parking traffic from units above.
