Working directly with the design team, the student alumni association and Facilities Planning, Hapa Collaborative is developing the public realm, landscape and roof gardens for the new Student Union Building at Simon Fraser University. Located between Convocation Mall and the Academic Quadrangle, the building and landscape are shaped to fit into the existing expression of the main mall, and provide a better connection to Maggie Bentsen and adjacent academic buildings. The landscape design rolls out a new plaza paving fronting onto the Mall, while echoing the existing landscape language of tiered lawns, bold planting and site furnishings. A suite of landscape furnishings on three different roof decks provide space for urban agriculture, a range of programmed outdoor events, and casual social space.
