The Hamilton Area Official Community Plan is an ambitious plan for the improvement of the urban landscape of Hamilton, Richmond, in concert with higher density residential development and commercial retail space. Hapa’s work includes development of the Official Community Plan Update in consultation with the City of Richmond as well as development and completion of Design Guidelines. Principles include integrating development with the public realm and designing in a vernacular unique to the community. The open space hierarchy includes “complete” pedestrian / vehicular streets, a commercial high street, pedestrian routes, rejuvenated agricultural canal corridors, a hierarchy of scaled plazas, and enhanced neighbourhood parks.
The full complement of public realm features will greatly enhance the neighborhood, providing amenities for the community and an ability to access amenities without the need for vehicular use. Next steps will include the realization of the Area Plan as a potential template for community development throughout Richmond.
