Hapa worked with Hatch on the conceptual and detailed design of six station plazas (out of the seven total) and several open space areas for Metro Vancouver’s new Evergreen SkyTrain Line. Our work was comprised of six (of the seven total) plazas, spread across two rapidly growing Lower Mainland municipalities (Port Moody and Coquitlam). Each plaza design responds to the urban imperatives of its site as well as to the functional needs of SkyTrain loading, unloading, operation and maintenance. Multimodal transportation factors, creating comfortable waiting and gathering space, and public art placement, are among the design considerations. In addition to the plazas, Hapa coordinated public art locations, paving, tree selection and designed open space improvements adjacent to the new rapid transit line to soften its effect on existing neighbourhoods. Throughout conceptual and detailed design, Hapa either lead or participated in discussions on the public realm with the consultant team, client, Translink, the three municipalities and various stakeholder groups.
