Hapa featured as one of 30 “Canadian Architecture Firms Breaking New Ground” by AZURE

Hapa Collaborative has focus on reinvigorating Vancouver’s public spaces and streets with engaging playgrounds and inviting resting spots… The project [Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza], which had a soft opening on June 22, is already adored by locals. Its most defining feature is a tricolour mosaic of asymmetric tiles. In Canadian cities public squares can be few and far between. This plaza’s dramatic upgrade gives a new face to the entire downtown core.

In light of Canada Day celebrations, Azure magazine handpicked firms that “express the power and vision of the nation” — what an honour to be alongside other inspiring Canadian colleagues. Thanks again for the nod, Azure team! Read more over at: http://www.azuremagazine.com/article/canada-150-30-canadian-architecture-firms/

Construction Update: Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza Soft Opening

As we reach the last week of June we are excited to preview and share the North Plaza at the Vancouver Art Gallery as it nears completion!

For those who have not yet taken a peek at the new plaza, please note the next opportunity to see the plaza will be exclusively during the upcoming Canada Day celebrations and the 4th Annual Thai Festival on the weekend of July 22-23. The plaza will be closed in between and after these events through the end of summer 2017.

Earlier this month we had the honour to test the new pavers, while simultaneously testing popsicle flavours supplied by Johnny’s Pops, as a big thank you to the hard working on-site Jacob Brothers Construction team.

This past weekend, the rest of Vancouver had the opportunity to preview the North Plaza’s soft opening in light of Vancouver International Jazz Festival‘s offering of free performances during their Downtown Jazz Weekend at the Georgia Street stage.

Thank you to Ema Peter Photography for previewing her beautiful captures from Jazz Fest opening weekend. We look forward to sharing more as the plaza progresses and once it is fully complete!

Now open: The Foot of Lonsdale’s Megabench

It’s here! The Megabench at the Foot of Lonsdale is complete and now open to the public. Thank you to City of North Vancouver staff and all visitors that braved the rain to visit our opening this morning in the North shore.

Mayor Darrell Mussatto and Councillor Linda Buchanan were there for the occasion, as were our clients from the City, Heather Reinhold and Monty Hurd. Below is Hapa’s own Doug, with the Mayor and Councillor Buchanan trying the bench out.

Jim Deva Plaza Speaker’s Corner – Opening Thursday July 28th

Tomorrow night, downtown Vancouver’s newest plaza opens to the public with live performances, entertainment, and a ribbon cutting with the Mayor.

Hapa designed and coordinated the fabrication of a commemorative speakers’ corner ‘soapbox’ feature for Jim Deva Plaza (plaza design by PFS Studio).
The public art/commemorative sculpture pays tribute to the plaza’s namesake Jim Deva, who was a beloved community member and champion of free speech rights and equality in the LGBTQ2+ Community in Vancouver. Inspired by the formal geometries of megaphones, grammaphones, and flowers alike, the piece is painted in pink and turquoise – the two colours from the original rainbow flag design that did not make it into mass production.

The plaza also celebrates Jim Deva’s role as advocate for parks and open space in Vancouver, making the street closure by the famous rainbow crosswalks a fitting dedication.

Join us tomorrow night at Jim Deva Plaza from 4-8:30pm for a lively night of celebration to kick off Vancouver Pride Week!

Terra Nova in Extraordinary Playscapes Exhibition by Design Museum Boston

Terra Nova Play Experience is one of many Extraordinary Playscapes from around the world currently part of an exhibition at the Design Museum Boston.

The exhibition is open in Boston until September 5th, 2016, after which it will visit the west coast in Portland, Oregon.

For the exhibition, Hapa created Playbook: Designing Terra Nova Play Experience – a book documenting the design process of the playground from public consultation, to models and renderings, and finally, construction.

2016 Vancouver Urban Design Awards – Mid Main Park!

We are excited to announce Mid Main Park took home the award for Urban Elements in the 2016 Vancouver Urban Design awards!

“We recognized the following projects for their outstanding contribution to visionary thinking and design excellence.”

A big thank you to the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, Equilibrium Consulting Ltd, Watanabe Engineering Ltd and Aplin & Martin Consultants Ltd in their efforts with Mid Main Park.

Congratulations to all the other winners!  What a great event, held every 2 years by the City of Vancouver, 2nd year running!

2015 CSLA Awards Announced…and we won!!!

We are super thrilled to bring home 2 awards from the 2015 CSLA Awards.  Both Terra Nova and McBurney Lane won Regional Citation Awards!

Terra Nova Play Experience, completed with the City of Richmond, and McBurney Lane, with the City of Langley, received Regional Citation awards in the Design category of the annual awards program that recognizes excellence and innovation in landscape architecture.

These projects represent the opposite ends of the design spectrum, one being an adventure playground tucked into an existing regional nature park at the mouth of the Fraser River, and the other a small interstitial plaza in the centre of downtown Langley.  Despite the different contexts, each project was the result of a thorough and engaging public process, a strong collaborative effort between the client, consultant team, and the builders, and talented group of designers of past and present Hapsters including Sarah Siegel, Doug Shearer, Nell Gasiewicz, Shelley Long, Katherine Wimble and Erika Mashig.  We would like to also acknowledge Yvonne Stich and Kevin Connery, park planners at Richmond, and Francis Cheung and Kara Jefford at the City of Langley for their leadership and guidance.

Thank you again to everyone who was involved on both the projects, couldn’t have done it without you!

Professor James Hitchmough Lecture in Vancouver Feb 19th, 2015

Hapa is excited to sponsor a great evening of learning on Feb 19th, 2015, 7:30 to 9:30 at Vancouver Special located at 3612 Main Street.

“James Hitchmough’s research has explored how to design, construct and manage nature-like vegetation and, secondly, to identify what are the key elements that allow this vegetation to be seen as a positive by urban people. This research and that of other urban ecological researchers in the world is increasingly showing that the needs of people and the needs of the invertebrates and vertebrates that live in designed vegetation have much more in common than has traditionally been believed; win:win situations are really possible.

James continues to road test his research through application to practice. In the UK he has recently implemented the first phase of a 15ha project with the Royal Horticultural Society known as the “Big Sky Meadows”, and is in the process of applying his ideas in many other countries.”
